DEMO FOR AMERICAN EASEL

LANDSCAPE

I don’t do a lot of landscape work, but here’s one that I love…

I call it “Out My Back Door”

THE DEMO

Here’s a photo from my window. I love the shapes the trees make and rich fall color but plan to simplify and abstract it as I did in the painting above.

STRATEGY

It’s always good to have a plan when you paint. Mine is to create a glowing underpainting of color, then add layers of darks on top to describe the trees. Here’s a posterized version of the above photo that is closer to what I have in mind to paint.

American Easel will have several artists painting at their booth at the Watercolor Society of Oregon’s Fall Convention in Salem Oregon. I’ll be there at 1pm, working on a watermedia panel. Moving out of my comfort zone, I’ll be adding a layer to a landscape painting! Then back in my home court, I’ll paint on a marbled panel — one of the Color-By-Me panels with a printed drawing and watermedia surface. I marbled on a couple of them already, and here’s what they look like BEFORE painting.
