COLLAGE DEMO AT EMERALD ARTS

TO GIVE YOU A FLAVOR OF WHAT THE DEMO IS ABOUT, HERE ARE A COUPLE OF CONCEPTUAL PIECES

TOP: The background for the painting will be a marbled map of Alaska, the subject is a sled dog. This piece will also involve watercolor painting and adding torn papers.

YOU’LL ALSO LEARN ABOUT
MARBLING PAPER

BELOW: Notice the marbled background is overpainted in watercolor to darken the value and show off the swan.

You’ll have an opportunity to watch Rene Eisenbart’s collage process during the art walk at Emerald Art Center in Springfield Oregon. She will take you step by step through putting together two styles — a painted and torn collage and a pattern and cut collage — using marbled and other handmade papers. Marbled paper, one of the best materials for collage making, is totally adaptable to the medium. You will see Rene’s 7-minute video to introduce the marbling process.

Starts at 5pm, come whenever you can.

A ROUGH SKETCH for a new collage, “Year Of The Dog”.

The idea was to create something for the Chinese New Year and collage seemed like a perfect answer — fun and provocative. This pattern shows basic value areas. You can also see the palette of papers that have been gathered and a cradled panel that will become the substrate for this piece. You’ll have to use your imagination to see how this piece will evolve — or come to the demo!

FROM PAINTING TO COLLAGE

This portrait was painted over a dark marbled background.

Adding strips of torn paper added a sense of hair. The great thing about collage is you can try things out and pretty much see what you’ll get BEFORE you commit to gluing it in place.
